What Is BOTOX®?

BOTOX®, also known as botulinum toxin, is a bacteria used to freeze certain facial muscles that have been overworked. The more these muscles are used, the more they strain, causing them to bunch-up and result in the formation of facial wrinkles. Your cosmetic dentist in Lakewood can dilute botulinum toxin and use it in small doses to temporarily smooth out facial lines and wrinkles. As a result, you can look years younger, look less tired or rundown, and feel more confident.
What Cosmetic Imperfections Does BOTOX® Address?

The best way to learn whether this treatment is right for your issues is to schedule a consultation to discuss what results you’d like to achieve. Many of our patients who visit us for BOTOX® are often looking to fix some of the following flaws:
- Crow’s feet that form at the far corner of the eyes from smiling or squinting.
- Lines between eyebrows formed from frowning.
- Horizontal lines in the middle of the forehead.
Why Should a Dentist Give You BOTOX®?

Visiting a dentist for injections to improve the appearance of wrinkles may seem odd. Perhaps you are considering going to a spa, dermatologist, or other resource for this treatment. However, who else understands the complexity of facial structures, muscles, and tissues better than a dentist? Dr. Artino continues to study and hone his skills in cosmetic procedures that improve the lives of our patients.
What Is BOTOX Treatment Like?

BOTOX® treatment involves facial injections. However, even if you’re scared of needles, you can rest assured that this cosmetic treatment is completely pain-free because we use one of the smallest medical needles that’s 31 gauge. This is the same needle that diabetics regularly use for insulin injections.
After discussing the results you’d like to achieve, Dr. Artino will mark areas of your face that are highly impacted by lines and wrinkles to map out where the injections will be administered. The length of your visit will depend on how many you would like, and each injection takes about five minutes, so appointments typically last anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes.
BOTOX® for TMJ Treatment
While many people are aware of how BOTOX® can be used to safely and temporarily reduce the appearance of motion-related wrinkles, you may not know about how this incredible treatment can be used to relieve the symptoms of TMJ disorder. By alleviating the tension in a person’s jaw joints, BOTOX® can allow their mouth to relax into a more comfortable alignment that helps prevent neck, back, and head pain. Here’s a quick look at how BOTOX® can be used to address TMJ disorders from the friendly team at Lakewood Complete Dentistry.
What Is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® injections contain a diluted amount of botulinum toxin, a protein that has a paralytic effect on muscles. By administering a small amount of this drug to the strained muscles in the jaw joins, BOTOX® can relieve the tension that causes pain and forces the jaw out of alignment. Results can take between five and ten days to set in and can last for three to four months, and the treatment can be safely repeated as needed to maintain the desired effects. BOTOX® injections can be administered in minutes, so the treatment can be a quick and convenient way to enjoy significant relief from the unpleasant symptoms of TMJ disorder. The treatment requires no recovery time, so the patient will be able to resume their normal daily activities afterward.
Are You a Good Candidate for BOTOX® for TMJ Treatment?
The first step to receiving BOTOX® treatment is to have a consultation at our Lakewood dental office so we can examine your jaw and review your medical history so we can make sure you can receive the treatment effectively and safely. BOTOX® may be able to help you if you experience symptoms like:
- Pain or tenderness in the jaw
- Difficulty moving the jaw
- Popping or clicking sounds when the jaw moves
- Earaches or persistent ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Pain in the neck or back
- Discomfort when chewing
- Pain behind the eyes
- Changes in bite alignment
While BOTOX® can be a fantastic way to address symptoms like bruxism, jaw tension, muscle spasms, and facial pain, it can only provide temporary relief since it cannot address the underlying causes of TMJ disorders. We’ll be happy to help you find the best way to restore comfort to your jaw when we see you during your consultation.
How Can BOTOX® Treat TMJ Disorder?
BOTOX® can do more than just enhance your appearance; it can also be used to temporarily relieve TMJ-related pain, allowing patients to stay more comfortable while the underlying cause of the problem is dealt with. A small BOTOX® injection can relax the muscles around your jaw joints and stop them from making the unconscious movements that contribute to TMJ disorder, thus easing any jaw tension you’ve been experiencing. One study found that BOTOX® reduced TMJ symptoms in 90% of participants, and another found that the treatment reduced jaw pain for at least three months.
BOTOX® FAQs
Do BOTOX Injections Hurt?
Nope! Many patients report a small stinging sensation when they receive a BOTOX injection, but it’s nothing that lingers. We use some of the smallest syringes available to make the process virtually pain-free. Many of our patients don’t even notice when the injection happens, but if you have a fear of needles or are anxious, just let us know, and we’ll do everything we can to help make you more comfortable.
How Quickly Does BOTOX Work?
BOTOX results typically are visible within a day or two, but optimal results appear between one and two weeks after your treatment. Each injection only takes a minute or two to administer, so the entire process is fast, simple, easy, and non-invasive.
How Many BOTOX Injections Should I Get?
The number of BOTOX injections you will need depends on what area of your face you’d like to focus on enhancing and the results you’d like to achieve. During your initial consultation, we’ll ask you questions to learn more about your BOTOX goals. Based on that, we’ll recommend several injections. To give you an idea, for certain problem areas, like minimizing crow’s feet, it can take anywhere between 10 and 20 units.
How Much Does BOTOX Cost?
The cost of BOTOX depends on how many injections you receive because each unit is priced separately. Before we begin your treatment, we’ll provide you with a detailed price, so you don’t feel left in the dark. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to ask our staff!
What’s the Best Age to get BOTOX?
There’s no ideal age to receive BOTOX injections. We see people who are 28 to 70 years old. If you believe BOTOX can help boost your confidence and enhance your image to make you feel more comfortable with your appearance, then you’re likely a good candidate!
