Veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry option for those looking to achieve a straighter, brighter, and more uniform smile. However, if you’re considering veneers, it’s important to understand the preparation process—including the fact that a small amount of your tooth enamel will need to be removed.

Let’s take a closer look at why this is necessary and how much enamel is typically taken off.

Why Do Veneers Require Enamel Removal?

Veneers are thin shells—usually made of porcelain or composite resin—that are custom-made to fit over the front surfaces of your teeth. In order for veneers to sit flush with your natural teeth and create a natural-looking, seamless smile, a bit of the outer layer of each treated tooth must be removed. This allows the veneer to bond securely without making the tooth look bulky or unnatural.

Removing enamel also helps ensure that the veneer adheres properly. Since enamel provides a strong, smooth surface, modifying it slightly gives the dental adhesive a better grip, enhancing the long-term stability of the veneers.

How Much Enamel Is Typically Removed?

The amount of enamel removed for veneers is minimal, typically about 0.5 millimeters. To put this into perspective, that’s roughly the thickness of a fingernail. This small reduction is enough to make room for the veneers while preserving the integrity of the tooth structure underneath.

In some cases, especially when no-prep or minimal-prep veneers are used, the amount of enamel removed can be even less. Your dentist will evaluate your unique situation to determine the most conservative approach that still provides beautiful, lasting results.

It’s important to note that enamel removal is permanent. Once enamel is taken away, it does not grow back. This is why veneers are considered an irreversible procedure. You’ll always need some form of restoration (either veneers or another type of covering) on those teeth moving forward.

What Is the Process for Veneer Placement?

Getting veneers typically requires two or more visits. During the first visit, your dentist will:

        • Examine your teeth and discuss your cosmetic goals.
        • Gently remove the thin layer of enamel necessary for proper veneer placement.
        • Take impressions of your teeth to ensure a perfect fit.
        • Apply temporary veneers to protect your teeth while the permanent ones are being crafted.

At the follow-up appointment, your dentist will bond the custom-made veneers to your teeth, making final adjustments to ensure a natural appearance and comfortable bite. With proper care, veneers can last 10-15 years or longer!
