The holiday season includes a few of the biggest travel days of the year since so many people go to visit family and old friends, but it can be hard to keep your teeth clean and healthy when you’re on a trip. The fare offered at fast food restaurants and gas stations is usually high in sugars, starches, and acids that can be quite harsh on your enamel and leave you more vulnerable to nasty oral infections. Here are a few tips to help you keep your smile in great shape when traveling over the holidays.

Have a Dental Checkup a Few Weeks Before You Travel

The American Dental Association recommends seeing your dentist every six months for routine exams and cleanings, and these appointments allow your oral health professional to monitor your smile and address problems in their early stages. Scheduling your next checkup a few weeks before your holiday trip may allow your dentist to detect the initial signs of enamel damage, cavities, and gum disease and treat them before you leave. This can prevent dental emergencies like toothaches from striking while you’re on the road.

Pack a Complete Oral Hygiene Kit

The harmful germs that cause tooth decay and gum disease do not take vacations, so you’ll need to keep up with your oral hygiene regimen even if you are traveling. To make this easy, it’s best to pack a portable oral hygiene kit that includes everything you need. Begin with a small container that can be easily cleaned and fill it with supplies like:

  • A toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Dental floss
  • Travel-sized antibacterial mouthwash
  • Any orthodontic supplies you use
  • Appliances like night guards, athletic mouthguards, or retainers

Drink Plenty of Water

Water should always be your primary source of hydration, but it can be a little too easy to drink acidic or sugary beverages like soda pop, coffee, and tea when you’re traveling. Keep in mind that water is harmless to your enamel and helps flush harmful bacteria and food residue away from your teeth when choosing your drink when you stop at a restaurant or gas station. Plain milk is also an excellent choice since it is nonacidic and rich with vitamins and minerals essential to your dental health.

Don’t let your holiday travels lead to painful dental emergencies. Consulting with your dentist can help you understand the best ways to keep your teeth healthy.
