While it’s true that most of the uncomfortable symptoms of these illnesses tend to occur in the lungs and sinuses, they can also cause a great deal of problems in your mouth. Here’s a closer look at five common oral health issues that can occur this time of year, and how to protect yourself from their damaging effects.

Cold Sores

Cold sores are lesions that form around your mouth and lips and are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV). Although they can develop at any time, they are very common in the winter because dry, chapped skin makes your mouth more susceptible to them. Thus, be sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and applying lip balm or moisturizer frequently.

Canker Sores

While harmless, canker sores can be very painful and annoying. They are often caused by stress, nutritional deficiencies, and even by eating acidic foods. Although there’s no specific reason you’d be more likely to get them in the winter, stress related to the weather, tax season, or any other events could easily trigger them. Thus, try to take time out of your day to practice some relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing. If you do get one, be sure to avoid biting or chewing on it, and rinse it frequently with warm saltwater to keep it clean and sooth it while it heals.

Chapped Lips

Winter is notorious for cold wind and dry air. Worse yet, if you enjoy outdoor sports, you can add sun exposure to the mix. Thus, be sure to apply plenty of lip balm to keep them hydrated, and if you’re headed outside, make sure it has an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your lips from the sun’s harmful rays. You can also use a humidifier in the home to increase the moisture levels in the air and your skin.

Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

Dry mouth can be caused by many things, including running heat or a fireplace, and certain medicines including cough and cold medication. In addition to feeling uncomfortable, dry mouth makes it harder for your body to wash away bacteria and food particles, increasing your risk of developing cavities and gum disease. Thus, be sure to drink plenty of water, and speak to your dentist about a prescription for a medication or hydrating mouth wash to help restore moisture levels in your mouth.

Sensitive Teeth

When the temperature outside drops, it can make your teeth feel more sensitive. Combined with conditions like dry mouth, sinus inflammation, and receding gums, this can make your teeth hurt more than usual. To prevent this, be sure to use a sensitive toothpaste, fluoridated mouthwash, and a soft-bristled toothbrush. If you are still experiencing sensitivity, speak to your dentist, as you may benefit from gum disease treatment.

Remember, while winter may seem like it lasts forever, the good news is that warmer weather and more ideal dental health conditions are right around the corner. In the meantime, be sure to keep your mouth strong all season long by protecting yourself from these five common oral health problems!

About Dr. Artino

Dr. Vicenzo Artino earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Regis University in Denver, and his dental doctorate at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine.
